Google +1 – 3 New Features you Need to Know About

For the past few months we have been +1ing our favourite posts and content as we currently do via Facebook, LinkedIn etc. Although up until now giving a piece of content your Google vote hasn’t carried any real value.

Votes in Google + Profile

When you give the content your vote it will now be pulled in to your Google + profile (such as mine) with the option to share with all or certain circles, a must have feature to give the circles real purpose. Share and get the opinions that really matter regarding that piece of content

Control Your +Snippets

You can use + snippets to customize the name, image and description that appears when your content is shared. Customise your post to appear with its best attributes on show to bump up the CTR. For example, if you are running a fashion site you may want people to share an image of the product, title and a brief description. This can all be controlled using the correct tags. The following is an example straight from the Google Blog

<body itemscope itemtype="">
<h1 itemprop="name">This is the article name</h1>
<img itemprop="image" src="thumbnail.jpg" />
<p itemprop="description">This is the description of the article.</p>

Inline Annotations for your social Graph

A visitor will now see whenever a page has been +1’d by people in their social graph. This will certainly improve engagement and will also give the visitor a quick glimpse into how relevant this post may be to them.  To add inline annotations, you need to update your +1 button code. Visit the configuration tool, select ‘inline’ from the ‘Annotation’ menu, and grab a new snippet of code.
